Engaging Visual, Comic Street Theatre
Markmark have a reputation for developing engaging visual, comic, street-spectacles and shows. They have worked on commissions for special events developing highly original productions alongside such partners as The National Theatre, London 2012, The Robin Hood Festival, Out There Festival and many others. They also tour internationally and over the last 25 years have performed all over the world to thousands of happy audiences.
Formed in the 90’s by Mark Tillotson, who trained at Ecole Jacques Lecoq and Ecole Philippe Gaulier, the company has developed its own style by fusing various comic elements including Commedia, Farce, Circus Skills, Pantomime and lots of improvisation. This has ensured that all of their shows have a broad appeal across a wide age range.
More recently they developed ‘Cannon Capers‘ for the Wolds Words festival. This involved the construction of a fully functional, magical, musical cannon. They also have developed ‘Just Desserts’ three outdoor comedy performances for the Cardiff International Food Festival and ‘Zigmund and Froyd‘ for the NT’s Watch This Space Festival.
This year they have produced a new show ‘The Great Fiasco‘ with the help of Seachange Arts and ZEPA. This has been specifically developed to be performed alongside other international acts at a group of festivals entitled La Fete Franglais culminating at the international circus and street arts festival ‘Out There’. This has involved building a beautiful, miraculous wooden dresser filled with trap-doors, escape hatches and many trick compartments.
Mark Tillotson
Mark Tillotson trained at Bretton Hall, Ecole Jacques Lecoq and Ecole Gaullier. He has devised and directed work with various companies including Markmark since 1991. With Markmark he has performed at over 2000 festivals throughout Europe including The Royal National Theatre and The 2012 Olympics. Mark has also lectured in physical theatre, commedia, street arts and Shakespeare at Leeds University, Lincoln BGC University College, Essex University and East 15 Drama School.
Maggie Marsden
After a career working as a nurse in the NHS Maggie decided a change of direction was needed. She went to Bretton Hall to study theatre, met Mark Tillotson and has been working with the company ever since. She has worked on commissions and projects from Arts Fresco, W.E. Wonders. London 2012 and Louth Literature Festival among many others. Maggie has also taught street theatre at Lincoln BG University and runs a wide range of skills workshops for all age groups.
